Event Recap: ESSENCE presents SMART BEAUTY V
Event Recap - ESSENCE presents SMART BEAUTY V - W Hotel - April 14, 2011
ESSENCE magazine hosted a beauty event on Thursday, April 14th to educate retailers, editors and industry professionals on how to market, sell and cater to African American women. ESSENCE conducted an in-depth research consumer marketing study to show "the mindset of the passionate African American beauty consumer" and enlisted top beauty experts to discuss individual and industry concerns, thoughts and trends. Panelists included: Mikki Taylor (ESSENCE Editor-at-Large), Cynde Watson (Makeup Artist & Beauty Expert), Elena L. Jones, M.D. (Dermatologist), Eric Bland (Celebrity Hairstylist) and Susan Akkad (Senior Vice President, Corporate Diversity Marketing, Estee Lauder Companies, Inc).
According to ESSENCE research, there are 4 main Archetypes when dissecting the AA woman beauty consumer:
Queen Bea -- supremely confident, knowledgeable
Sheree De La Sol -- experimental, likes prestige and innovative brands and wants to conquer aging
Amber B. Free -- independent spirit, brand loyal, conscious, cautious and practical
Jane Jones -- the minimalist, time sensitive and likes the natural look
The ESSENCE Dream Team -- (L to R) Corynne L. Corbett (Beauty Director), Constance White (Editor-in-Chief), Michelle Ebanks (President) and Mikki Taylor (Editor-at-Large)
During the breakfast, there was a presentation that displayed the FOUR BASIC ARCHETYPES of black consumers. The presenters did an awesome job!
The breakfast/presentation/panel begins . . . giving powerful stats on AA women, retail & consumer habits, marketing tactics and more! ESSENCE knows what black women want!
Beauty professionals galore!
The event mission was definitely accomplished! A huge thank you to ESSENCE for highlighting the power of the AA woman consumer and educating retailers, editors and beauty professionals on how to market, sell and cater to our needs! We need more outlets like you!

The Biggest Trade Show for MakeUp Artists . . . . IMATS
About The International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) --
IMATS is the make-up world’s biggest gathering. Thousands of make-up artists, vendors and enthusiasts discuss, display and collect the best the industry has to offer. Make-up pros from fashion and film (including Oscar, BAFTA and Saturn award winners) provide education and demonstrations at IMATS, and new products often debut there. IMATS also features a make-up museum and an Afterglow party, where trade-show guests can socialize.
Before IMATS, there were no trade shows specifically designed for make-up artists, although cosmetic companies had expressed a desire for such an event. In response, Make-Up Artist magazine publisher Michael Key held the first IMATS in August 1997 in Los Angeles. It allowed artists to customize what they wanted to see and it offered a diverse mix of products, demonstrations and education from industry leaders.
