Wondering what Anna Wintour wants has become a cottage industry of its own. Does she want to be a diplomat? A theatrical impresario? A grand dame? Have a broader corporate editorial role? Well, that last one may have some truth to it.

Every couple of months, someone, typically on deadline, throws out a new scenario. How about Anna to go on for Regis? And then in a matter of minutes it’s everywhere, in Mike Allen’s Playbook, on the “Today Show,” another mini story to feed the news cycle.

On Tuesday, Bloomberg News caught up with the practically fossilized rumor the White House wants Wintour to be its ambassador to the U.K. or France. The ambassador idea gained currency already in June after it was reported in two major British newspapers: The Guardian, where Wintour’s brother Patrick is a political editor, and The Independent. Then, the papers cited speculation among insiders. Later, The New York Times picked up the thread in a Styles piece.

Bloomberg was tipped by “two people familiar with the matter.”

This could have been, quite plausibly, someone in the White House, which has ample reasons to be thankful to Wintour for her role in organizing lavish dinners in the run-up to the election. Or it could have been an aide wondering out loud on the set of Bloomberg TV’s upcoming interview with President Barack Obama.

CELEBRATING THE BEST IN BEAUTY WITH COSMETIC EXECUTIVE WOMEN

2011 Beauty Awards Finalists Announced

New York, NY – April 12, 2011 – Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) has announced the Finalists for the 2011 CEW Beauty Awards, the industry’s highest honor. Now in its 17th year, the CEW Beauty Awards celebrate the most innovative products of the year. The Finalists were chosen from more than 600 products from nearly 350 top brands.

The CEW Beauty Awards are the only awards program where the Finalists are chosen exclusively by beauty insiders. The roster of Finalists, voted on by more than 4,000 professionals in the field, has become beauty consumers’ most coveted shopping list. “Due to the vast amount of beauty products on the market, it’s difficult for consumers to determine which products they need. Each year, CEW members select the best products from over 600 submissions.,” says Carlotta Jacobson, President of CEW.

The CEW Board of Governors will now vote on the 139 Finalists to determine the winners across 26 categories. The winners will be announced at the CEW Beauty Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 20th, at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Comedian and Actor Mario Cantone will emcee the event again this year.

This also marks the first year for the CEW Eco Beauty Award. Sponsored by Givaudan, the new Award is a response to the growing importance to consumers of products’ environmental impact on the planet. The Award recognizes products or product lines that have specifically moved towards the goal of sustainability. Ten finalists, from more than 40 entrants, have been vetted by the global organization, The Natural Step. A special Eco Beauty Voting Committee will vote on the winner, which will be revealed at the Luncheon.

Read how Youtube Makeup Artist Extraordinaire becomes Lancome's Spokesperson

LANCÔME’S VIDEO MAKEUP ARTIST MICHELLE PHAN

Michelle Phan
Makeup artist Michelle Phan

Michelle Phan was signed by Lancôme to be its official video Makeup Artist. The 22-year-old art student, the most popular Makeup Artist on YouTube, has created special videos for the French beauty brand. At launch, Lancôme’s first how-to video with YouTube, which is on romantic makeup, has generated 1.5 million viewers. “Michelle is a true makeup prodigy,” declared Serge Jureidini, President of Lancôme USA. “She represents the next generation of both makeup users and Makeup Artists.”

Lancôme is the first beauty brand and the first luxury brand to add a social media superstar to its roster. Ms. Phan joins a distinguished sorority of Lancôme Spokespeople and Artists, from award-winning Actresses Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway to Supermodel Daria Werbowy and Makeup Artist Sandy Linter. “This is a dream come true,” enthused Ms. Phan. “My goal always has been to teach and inspire. To have a brand I love and admire support this goal is amazing.”

Ms. Phan’s YouTube channel has more than 500,000 subscribers, and her videos have been viewed more than 117 million times. She began posting videos to YouTube in May 2007 and quickly became known for a signature style comprised of her melodic voice, easy-to-follow steps, black-and-white title pages and lullaby-like music. Her videos run the gamut from transformations into Snow White and Lady Gaga to eye makeup tutorials to club makeup how-to’s.

A self-taught Makeup Artist who transformed her favorite hobby into something that has inspired people around the world, Ms. Phan made her first video, “Natural Looking Makeup Tutorial” in Spring 2007. She uploaded it to YouTube that May and since then, has created and posted more than 80 videos. Each video was filmed and edited by Ms. Phan alone using her JVC camcorder and the iMovie software on her MacBook Pro.

The popularity of her videos took Ms. Phan by surprise, but she understands that makeup enthusiasts are eager to learn in an accessible, unintimidating way. “It’s comforting to play a video at home and apply makeup along the way,” she explained. “You can pause, rewind, fast-forward, hit mute and end it at any time. You can’t do that with a Makeup Artist in person. They’d go crazy if they had to repeat, pause and redo everything a million times.”

Ms. Phan’s interest in makeup began as a young girl playing with her mother’s products. Art was another passion. “My family couldn’t afford a TV, so my main form of entertainment was a sketchbook I made by stapling blank pages together,” she continued. “I’ve been drawing ever since.” Ms. Phan’s mother wanted her to study medicine in college, but she had other ideas. She went on to study illustration at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida.

Joining the Lancôme team in February, Ms. Phan first came to its attention because she had used several of the brand’s products in her videos, and the brand was captivated by her unique approach to the medium. “Lancôme is legendary, so I was shocked when they reached out to me,” she added. “I’m very excited about the things we’ll be doing together.”

Last year, Ms. Phan and a partner created a niche skincare brand called IQQU that is sold online in the US and throughout Asia. She has worked backstage as a Makeup Artist Assistant at the Chris Benz and Michael Kors Spring 2010 fashion shows. She reported that it was an interesting experience to make up others instead of herself. “It was nice to have a different canvas. I learned so much working on Models and with other Makeup Artists.” She was also backstage once again working as a Makeup Artist for some of the Fall 2010 collections.

Mary J. Blige puts her strength in a bottle and launches FRAGRANCE on HSN!

Mary J. Blige Introduces ‘My Life’

Mary J 1bFor years, Mary J. Blige has put her turbulent and triumphant life into song. Now, the Grammy award-winning chanteuse is putting it into a bottle. On July 31, Ms. Blige will introduce her first fragrance, My Life, exclusively on HSN.

“It is the epitome of a confident woman,” Ms. Blige said of the fragrance, which shares the name of her landmark 1994 album. “It doesn’t scream out for attention—it’s feminine but strong, powerful yet humble.”

The unconventional launch strategy marks the first time that HSN will exclusively introduce a prestige fragrance on its airwaves—which presents a unique opportunity, said HSN CEO Mindy Grossman. On-air, Ms. Blige will be able to relate her life story to the retailer’s 93 million viewers. “It’s 93 million homes,” Ms. Grossman clarified, “but a one-on-one experience.”

HSN already enjoys a thriving relationship with Carol’s Daughter—the homespun, Brooklyn-founded beauty line which is “presenting” the scent and in which Ms. Blige is a part owner.

As a fan of Ms. Blige’s work and her authentic storytelling capabilities, Ms. Grossman felt My Life was a perfect fit. “This is not so much a business transaction for us as it is a relationship that we believe in wholeheartedly.”

Mary J-2Though she’s a self-admitted tom boy, Ms. Blige had distinct opinions on the formulation of the juice, which was ultimately developed by Firmenich’s Ilias Ermenidis. “I’m a foodie,” Ms. Blige said, “and that’s what I love so much about Carol’s Daughter products. I wanted something that would become a part of you, that would be edible.”

Ms. Blige created the fragrance in collaboration with Carol’s Daughter founder and president, Lisa Price. “It was an honor for me to hold the hand of a woman I admire so much and stand beside her as she created this amazing scent,” Ms. Price said of the process.

Top notes of My Life include gardenia petals, bartlett pear and white freesia; heart notes include tuberose, apricot flower, jasmine and gold lily; the dry-down features incense praline, sesame and cashmere wood.

Housed in a heart-shaped, Chad Lavigne-designed bottle, My Life is priced at $46.00 for 1.7 oz. It makes its on-air debut on July 31.

For each fragrance sold, $1.00 will be donated to The Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN), a non-profit founded by Ms. Blige and marketing guru Steve Stoute, who also serves as CEO and managing director of Carol’s Daughter. FFAWN seeks to “empower and encourage women by shaping and supporting programs that foster education, career development, strong self-esteem, and personal growth,” its website said.
