Leading a Peaceful Path

Sometimes passion and prayer are your only keys to survival. You have a dream and by dream, I mean things you want in your life, not just goals, but essential elements that you deem important. After college, you feel a sense of confidence. And why shouldn't you?! After all, you did study hard for four years, took out student loans, endured homesickness and overcame many other obstacles to achieve your goals. And then BOOM . . . reality hits and you're on a path to success, but how you're going to get there and what you need to do seems a bit fuzzier than you would've ever anticipated. There is no school curriculum, teacher guidance, semester schedule or pre-made timeline of how to get to your destination. So, what now?! Well, acknowledging that success is no straight path is first and foremost and then surrounding yourself with the right people always seems to help. Oh, and don't forget faith. As you travel along this road called life, I wish you nothing but peace because with peace, you will have a sound mind, spirit and heart to chase your most desired goals. And with peace and faith, all things are possible!

Social Slang vs. Professional Communication

The line between social media and professional communication has been blurred and many folks are falling victim. As a Professional Coach, I feel it is my duty to call out this MAJOR CONCERN! I realize it is the age of social media and texting, however many people are muddling online slang with professional communication and completely disregarding the rules of business etiquette. So exactly what is the issue? Well, for starters, individuals (students AND professionals are both guilty of this mistake) are using slang such as: "c u tmrw", "c'mon", "y not", "thx", "ur welcome", "u", "k", as well as smiley face symbols and nicknames for professionals they do not know! But, just because it is growing in popularity, this type of dialogue is inappropriate for professional communication.
Before you send your next professional message, be sure to internalize these very important communication rules for success! Read the complete article here!

Book Review: You Are A Brand!

My FAB Thoughts - YOU ARE A BRAND (2nd Edition) - By Catherine Kaputa

October 31, 2012

You Are a Brand is an easy read self-branding book providing the foundation you need to accomplish 3 main goals: self-branding ideas (what makes you stand out), strategies to market your self-brand (in-person and online) and ideas to create more visibility around your work (with the understanding that working hard is simply not enough to get noticed).

You Are A Brand highlights the main ideas that I have been teaching since starting The FAB Network - how to identify your WOW Factor (special and unique qualities about yourself, both tangible and intangible), positively exploit your WOW Factors (use what you've got to get what you want) and implemention of your WOW Factors (the work you do to create opportunities for yourself). Of course, Kaputa explains her message in very different terms, however her basic principals follow suit. If you are seeking a good read on how to work smarter, not just harder then you have found a great resource for you. Why? Because I work with a lot of individuals (all the way from middle school students to adults) and have learned that we are all seeking the same thing in life - positive recognition and success in exchange for our hard work. Seems like an easy desire to wish for, however some people are seemingly luckier than others when receiving their merit of praise. Why? Well, the book really highlights how to hone in on your special traits and use them for your advantage, moreso than just seeking popularity or praise, but rather showcasing your skills and talents so that you are top of mind when a job opportunity, networking function or extra projet comes up. Bottom line is this - you want the RIGHT people to think of you when opportunities arise. If they are unaware of your recent accomplishments, WOW Factors, interests and work ethic then how on earth would they know to contact you?! And that's where You Are A Brand comes into play.

The book is broken down into 3 parts:
  1. Brand Strategy: Finding Your Self-Brand Idea
  2. Creative Development: "Packaging Brand You"
  3. Marketing Brand You: Building Visibility and Connection With Your Target Audience
If you're working really hard (that's awesome), yet know no one knows of your great outcomes (that's a shame). Stop being shy, nervous, indifferent, too busy or whatever adjective you are being and make time to create a brand for yourself that will help you grow your career faster, more efficiently and with better results!
