Social Branding: Positives and Negatives

What does "Social Branding" mean?! Well, for starters, you must understand the power of social networking and social media. Combined, these two entities are playing a vital role in the way the entire world is communicating today. You could very well be left out of some important conversations, updates and notices if you are not linkedin, twittered out, and facebook friendly. I mean, with all the up and coming ways to communicate you really have to decide what works best for the message you are trying to send and receive. Bottom line is this - whether or not you like social networking, it is a huge factor in the way companies, professionals and students are discussing relevant business matters, so it is imperative that you find which network best suits you and become apart of this whole era of indirectly communicating. Trust me when I say, you don't have a choice. On the flip side, you could keep it simple and use the phone or email as your primary source for outreach, but note, in order to maximize your "personal and social branding statement" it is much more effective to stay socially trendy in order to reach the masses and more importantly, have an outlet for the masses to reach you!
There are so many ways to bring your resumes and passions to life by displaying your skills through the various social network outlets. We can all name the stalkerish ways that social media has invaded our privacy (if we let it) but we also have the privileged opportunity to expand our reach far beyond what was feasible years ago. So, you have to ask yourself, how are you to going to take advantage of these FREE opportunities and exploit them to your best interest. That's the key!

Before you start, there are a few things you should consider: what message are you trying to convey, what audience are you trying to reach, what is your marketing elevator speech (meaning, who are you and what are your goals in 20 sec or less) and in what ways do you plan to use social media to achieve your goals? In order to truly use these social sources in a professional manner, you have to be strategic so that people don't taste the medicine in the candy you're feeding them. They only taste the sweetness, never realizing the message you have stuffed in between the caramel (Facebook) and chocolate (LinkedIn). If your plan of action is not well thought out, you and your ideas will appear to be just another junk message that will be ultimately ignored.

*****Social branding is an imperative stepping stone t0 professionals and entrepreneurs building and sustaining relevancy in today's competitive market, so before you knock social media, make sure you have fully explored the positives and negatives!*****

FAB has caught on and we're hanging tight! Catch FAB on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter!!! Even more social networking sites coming soon . . .

How to be CrEaTIvE: In this Economic Crisis!

How to Keep Your Sanity AND Your Career . . .

Professional advice that we ALL need to hear!

During these economic times, it essential for us to be creative, resourceful, flexible and resilient. Acting any other way, will cause you, well, great frustration and fear! Knowing that pretty much everyone, everywhere is also experiencing some sort of turbulence is comfort to some, but many of us are so consumed with our issues that we don't have the time, or simply the energy to even think about the concerns of others. Question is, how do you keep your sanity when everything you once knew is seemingly fading with no confirmation if we'll ever see it again?! These days, it's no shocker for finances to be a shamble, moral at its lowest, attitudes very short, frustration rising and inspiration is no where to be found. If you are experiencing any of these emotions or diliemmas, know that you are not alone. FAB is here share some helpful hints that will help you overcome this unfortunate time. On the flip side, the only way we can take our problems from flab to FAB, is to be creative and resourceful - realizing that with continued persistence and hardwork, we have to get a break. And when that break comes, we must have the career tools in our tool kit.

Ways to overcome today's social and economic drama . . .

- Find a mentor (Surround yourself with someone that is seasoned in the area of adversity, triumph, creativity, reason and inspiration. By teaming up with a professional that has years of experience, they will be able to give you tangible advice that will help drive your ship into the dock of success and victory. What better to become the best, than by learning from the best?!)

- Determine your goals (It's much harder to achieve a goal when you are not focused. You must hone in on what you are trying to accomplish. When your energy and resources are spread too thin, you end up spinning your wheels with no track record of success or tangible results. Separate your thoughts: long-term goal vs. short-term goal. Once you determine your goals, write them down or tell a career partner. In order for this excercise to be most effective, you must make yourself accountable. It's easy to throw out ideas, but how are you going to ensure that your ideas happen?! That's for you to figure out!)

- Get Educated (Especially because many of us have never experienced this sort of economic turmoil, we are clueless as to how we climb out on top. There is seemingly a learning and achievement gap in how upcoming and seasoned professionals remain resilient and flexible. Learn how to bridge the gap by becoming immeshed in learning. Our old tactics to achieving success are seemingly irrelevant now. We have to create a fresh plan that will put us above the competition. Question is, how do you find a job, internship network, get a promotion, remain employed, keep your sanity?! Read indstry magazines, books, conduct informational interviews, etc.)

- Get Out and Go!Go to events, expand your network, volunteer ---> do everything that will put you in the face of other peers and professionals)

- Pick Your Battles (There are many things to stress about these days, you really have to decide where you use your mental energy!)

- Find your happy corner (What makes you happy, feel at ease, smile and gives you that burst of energy?! Whatever it is, stay close to it and re-energize yourself whenever you are feeling low on gas!)

FAB is hoping this article provided some sort of encouragement and inspiration to keep pressing forward, despite the uneasiness happening all around us...regardless, try and stay FAB!

What's YOUR Goal for the Summer?

What is your short term goal? We've moved past Winter and Spring, now Summer is fast approaching and as we enjoy the blazing sunset and firey hot days, we must also set a few small goals for ourselves to ensure that we're staying on track with our achieving our yearly goals. We're half way through the year, time to re-evaluate what's happened and where we're trying to go in the next 6 months. We need to take a rest stop and reflect . . .

Don't stress or fret if you've somehow lost sight of your goals. That's why FAB is here to send you a friendly reminder that it's time to mesh the idea of having a fun summer with the idea of summer success! These 2 thoughts are not so distant that we can't achieve both . . .

Before the Summer officially starts, FAB has homework for you. Get out your career journal and think about and answer the following questions:

Career Journal: Summer Short Term Goals
- What happened in the last 6 months? How have I progressed in 2009?
- What are my key takeaways in 2009?
- What were the drawbacks/obstacles in the first 6 months of 2009?
- What am I trying to accomplish by the end of 2009?
- What steps am I taking to accomplish my year-end goals?
- What is my summer game plan?
- What are the steps I am going to take to achieve my summer goals?
- What are the foreseeable obstacles, how will I overcome these issues?

At the end of your journal entry, post these questions/answers in a place where they are visible to you (i.e. on the frig, in the bathroom, on your dresser, at your office desk, etc.). It needs to be posted in an area that will hold you accountable for your goals and actions to serve as a friendly reminder to you. Not to stress you out, but more like a nudge when you fall off the bandwagon. We all need those nudges . . .

Good luck with your summer fun and goals! It is my hope that you will have a blast enjoying the summer rays and that you will not only have gained a beach bum tan, but will have achieved your summer's wildest dream!

Stay FAB in the summer!
