The STOP! START! CONTINUE! Theory

Use what you've got to get what you want!

The only way to successfully complete this task is to be self-reflective and understand how to to make impactful decisions. But even before the decision-making comes into play, we must analyze where we are and where we're trying to go. The STOP! START! CONTINUE! theory is one that helps us to STOP having thoughts and making decisions that are not contributing to positive progression or success, in turn we need to START realizing what steps we need to take to push our goals forward and CONTINUE to do those things that have proven to provide tangible results. This theory is used amongst the most successful professionals, it is a proven theory that works!



How do YOU begin?!


Write down your "to-do" list. This is the only way that you will be able to remember what your goals and objectives are. Make a chart - one bucket for STOP! START! CONTINUE! Write down feasible goals that you can attain all by yourself. The tasks that you write down should be easy and simple. The point of this exercise is to give yourself a small, somewhat easy task(s) to do that will in turn have huge, powerful results. See below for example...

Example of the STOP! START! CONTINUE! theory:

STOP!:
- I would like to stop procrastinating and begin to complete my tasks ahead of time so that I will have more time to review my work and feel less stressed.

START!:
- I would like to start using online social networking sites more to expand my network and meet like-minded professionals. I would also like to attend more industry events that will link me to other professionals.

CONTINUE!:
- I would like to continue being proactive in working on my personal projects and making progress in achieving my short-term goals.

Result of STOP! START! CONTINUE! theory:

The result of this theory is that you have now made yourself blatantly clear of your vision and created a mini strategy on how to get to the finish line. By becoming aware of things that we are doing and need to improve on will help us to make strategic decisions that will lead to a more streamlined result. It's such an easy task that has profound results. Make sure you try this exercise at home! You will begin to notice small changes in your attitude and work ethic that will make you proud you took part!


Good luck on stopping the things that aren't pushing you forward, starting the necessary things to attain success and continuing to do the things that matter!

Hello my fellow FAB Members, Believers, Readers and Dreamers, I haven't personally touched base in awhile and I wanted to check in on you and extend my heartfelt thanks for continuing to support FAB through your comments on the site, words of encouragement and every piece of advice you've given me. FAB is in its' infancy stages and continues to evolve as more and more college students and career professionals become aware of FAB and all of its' offerings. I truly believe that FAB is a much needed organization, especially during this economic turmoil. Now more than ever, it is essential that we package ourselves and hone the skills necessary to succeed and stand out from the competition. Now is not the time to back down and let fear overcome our desire to step out on Faith and believe that we deserve to be both, happy and successful. This thought should not be a weird dichotomy in your mind, nor should it be a far-fetched dream. FAB is more than a career-driven organization, it is a safe-haven for individuals with no plan to feel safe expressing who they are and who they aspire to be, it is a place that helps you to garner the tools you need to begin your career journey, it is a place that teaches individuals how to elevate an existing career and most importantly, FAB is an organization set to help you build the dream life you aspire to attain. It is my hope that by becoming a FAB member, you are well on your way to experiencing life-changing advice, education and inspiration that will serve as a catalyst for your personal and professional happiness. Drake: He Has That "WOW Factor" . . . Performance at S.O.B's in NYC

SINGER/RAPPER DRAKE had NYC on lock last night!



Drake aka Drizzy aka Singer/Rapper/Undergound Artist is on Fiahhh!!! I mean, seriously this dude had the ladies AND the fellas rockin. He is new to mainstream listeners, but this Canadian born and bred singer/rapper has been on his grind for a minute. And it's paid off! On Tuesday, May 27th, Drake performed at "Who's Next Live" at S.O.B.'s sponsored by Hot 97 in NYC. The opening acts were GC Soul and Soul Mafia. GC Soul is 2 white brothers (or shall I say brothas) that have some real talent. I mean, for them to not be widely publicized they had the crowd hype. Soul Mafia stayed on stage for awhile - their music is a mesh of hard-core rap mixed with soul and rock. Nice mix!
Now on to the ladies man, Drizzy!! This dude is only 23, but he has some serious swagger. He couldn't even get on the stage good, before the crowd went crazy. He performed many of his hits (that only true fans would recognize) and his HIT SINGLE, "You the Best." That's my JAM! If you haven't heard of Drake before, you should definitely check out his single or better yet, you should go get his album RIGHT NOW. His CD is one that you can just ride to - it's got that mellow tone to it infused with rap. Both the ladies and fellas are feeling Drake. It's only a matter of time before he has the music industry on lock. I wish him good luck. Not only does he have talent, but he performs really well live and not to mention he's a cutie...

She's more than just another entrepreneur; this girl has STYLE ...VALSTYLE!

She's the epitome of what it takes to not only have a creative idea, but to take it by the reigns and go after her dream full force - despite naysayers. Her name is Val Idehen. Val has a way of igniting a sparkle in the room, whether it is her out of the box style, go get ‘em attitude or her down to earth demeanor. She has an extensive resume at the tender age of 26. Her impressive background made FAB want to know more . . . Ivy League Graduate - check!, FIT Alum - check! Former MTV Networks Employee - check!, Fashionista - check!, Entrepreneur - check! Although everything Val touches seemingly turns to gold, her blossoming success has not come without trial and error.




Val sums up her entrepreneurial drive with a simple phrase, “you almost have to be possessed by the thing. I’m convinced only other entrepreneurs know what I’m talking about.”

In that vein, Val sat down with FAB for an exclusive interview to share the story of her path – including juicy details on how her company ValStyle became an actual business and not just an idea on a sticky note!


FAB: Having your own business is so tough, what made you decide to move forward?

Val: I think I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit . . . especially thinking back on high school and college and the activities I participated in, groups or events I started . . . it definitely makes sense I’d end up pursuing entrepreneurship. But I will say if I had known that managing a start-up enterprise would be this difficult, I probably would have thought it too daunting and never tried. Once I started though, it was impossible to turn back. And I started because I couldn't ignore the opportunity.

FAB: I believe you - it's like entrepreneurship has a life of it's own. But, part of what makes you stand out is that you don't sit by the sidelines, you dive right in. Where did you get your “go get ‘em” approach from?

Val: Well, I am from an immigrant family and we were very entrepreneurial . . . I’m the first to start a company, but the way we survived as a family was incredibly entrepreneurial. I am one of five kids and we were always taught to be resourceful, resilient and creative -- we made a little go a very long way. Growing up, I was encouraged to keep learning and growing, to get as much as I could out of every opportunity, to push myself to accomplish more and more and to just experience as much as I could in life. After a while, you just believe you can do anything you set your mind to.

FAB: That's a great philosophy! Your educational background is very impressive, why did you decide to attend YALE? And more importantly, how did that experience shape your career?

Val: My older brother went to Yale and he and I have always been very close. So I was exposed to his experience during my high school years in boarding school and I felt as if I already had a connection to the school. At Yale, I had the opportunity to perform in a couple of groups, and with one in particular, I was able to travel and hold leadership positions. I also held three work-study jobs throughout my time there and got to work closely with Elizabeth Alexander. Working with her was especially impactful because I saw a woman who was earning a living through art and her own creativity. I’d say that was my first real taste of the entrepreneur’s life and the idea that you can chart your own individual course. I’ve always had different interests and enjoyed being involved in many different types of projects and activities. I think that love and my experiences at Yale led me to appreciate all the different aspects of being in business.

FAB: You definitely possess a pizzazz and style that most could NEVER pull off. How did your interest in fashion spawn into your company ValStyle?

Val: Well I started the business intuitively, just because of people complimenting my style and liking what I would go to sample sales and get. Lol. I fell into shopping for my colleagues and while I knew I was good at deal hunting and shopping, I knew I didn't know anything about the business of retail. So I started taking classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Through studying and learning on the job, I found out retail is very serious business. I got organized. And eventually I clearly couldn't do two jobs at once. It was clear ValStyle was becoming its own thing and I had to pay attention to it.

FAB: How would you describe ValStyle?

Val: ValStyle is an innovative approach to retail merchandising done through network-based distribution channels, personalized shopping experiences and of course, the world wide web. I love how the internet can be such an efficient marketplace. It allows for companies like ValStyle to be nimble and flexible and for shopping to be customized to what consumers want.

FAB: What is a rewarding aspect of being an Entrepreneur?

Val: As an entrepreneur, you’re a living realization of how we as people are our greatest assets…our capabilities, our creativity, what we can do, how we can create something out of nothing. That excites me the most.

FAB Attends Universal Records Concert - FEATURING Melanie Fiona & Anthony David

On May 22nd, FAB attended an after-work treat at Element in NYC's Lower East Side. 2 live performances. Intimate setting. Soulful artists = Perfect combination. Music connoisseurs and industry leaders were in attendance to listen and support Universal Motown's newest R&B Sensation, Melanie Fiona and Universal Republic's soulful artist, Anthony David. Melanie Fiona performed her smash hit single, "Give It To Me Right." Her voice is so authentic and her talent is undeniable - this girl has amazing singing skills and LIVE, I might add! She also performed her next and upcoming single, "It Kills Me". I LOVE this song. Go BUY her album and support the record industry by legally buying/downloading her music.

* Liaise with PR, E-Commerce, Merchandising and Sales Promotion on new product launches to ensure press and on-line efforts are in line with brand positioning
* Coordinate with operations to have insight into inventory and sku management within the categories
* Attend all Product-to-Market meetings and come prepared to discuss your projects and time lines
* Continue to develop structure and process within product marketing role
* Facilitate needs for special initiatives with our retail partners relating to categories managed
* Conduct post-mortem evaluations for all programs/launches

Job Requirements


* Minimum 5 years experience in product marketing, preferably in beauty with a specific focus on hair care
* Highly analytical with the ability to gather, dissect and evaluate large amounts of information make recommendations to management
* Innate project management skills with a high attention to detail
* Process-oriented
* Must be creative and innovative, and be able to articulate thoughts and ideas clearly
* Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Confident public speaking skills
* Must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to communicate with all levels of management, and perform effectively as a team player
* Must be a self-starter and eager to learn through hands-on experience
* Needs to be highly organized and able to prioritize effectively
* Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and thrive in a dynamic and undefined environment

Who's Who in BLACK - New York City


On Monday, May 18th Apollo hosted New York City's Networking Event of the YEAR! The world-famous Apollo Theater hosted the Who's Who in BLACK New York City event. Any and every Black professional in NYC was honored last night - celebrating the best and brightest of movers and shakers in the city. Some of the 2009 Honorees were Russell Simmons, Soul Food Entrepreneur Sylvia Woods (Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem), Actress Ruby Dee, Rev. Al Sharpton, Jr. and many, many more! Many names were recognizable, yet some of them are the quiet shakers that make tremendous differences in the lives of many, without the glitz and glamour.

Founder and CEO C. Sunny Martin gave his remarks at the event to honor every individual who has made a conscious effort to make a positive difference in the community. He made it very clear that this prestigious award was not to solely honor the top ranking corporate execs, but instead an award to acknowledge those individuals whose accomplishments speak louder than wealth or title. The Who's Who Award is a gigantic movement toward recognizing the black community in a whole new way. Mr. Martin went on to say that he is honored to be apart of such a prestigious organization, one that stands for change and service.

It was truly an honor to be in the presence of such hard-working and accomplished professionals.
