NYWIC presents "A Conversation with Nicholas Kristof"

New York Women in Communications (NYWIC)

Presents

A Conversation with Nicholas Kristof - A Discussion of journalism and his book "Half the Sky"

How do you turn oppression into opportunity?
Nicholas Kristof , the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, New York Times columnist, op-ed columnist and author will be speaking about his new book: "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide." It was co-authorized with his wife Sheryl WuDunn who were the first married couple to win a Pulitzer Prize in journalism for their coverage of China's Tiananmen Square democracy movement in the book "China Wakes: The Struggle for The Soul of a Rising Power."
Mr. Kristof is the kind of reporter that gives voice to the voiceless around the world and in his latest tome, he addresses worldwide maltreatment, marginalization and brutality towards women. It is a compelling picture of the trials and triumphs of women struggling for opportunity and equality and has already received raves from international human rights activists such as Melinda Gates, Angelina Jolie, Tom Brochaw and George Clooney.

Half The Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide
focuses on how women around the world have turned oppression into opportunity. With the deep culture of oppression around the world, Nicholas Kristof and his wife Sheryl have tried to fight this abuse to become agents for social change through pen and pad. They have discovered that the key to bringing change is through four agenda items: ending of human trafficking, lowering maternal mortality rates, using microfinance to help women make their own living, and providing education for all.
Mr. Kristof tells of a young Cambodian woman who was sold to a brothel in Malaysia and eventually escaped by climbing a small ladder that led from one building to another. She returned to Cambodia and an American organization started her in business with a little pushcart. She turned out to be a fantastic businesswoman and now she's a local clothing tycoon.
By telling stories like this, Mr. Kristof and Ms. WuDunn have shown that helping the local economy is the real force and formula behind economic development. They've noted that the women who have been able to survive is rooted in what they went through and gives them a foundation for what it takes to make it work in the future.
Mr. Kristof will be signing copies of "Half The Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide" at the end of the Q&A portion of the program.
If you'd like to know more about getting involved, Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn have set up "Half the Sky Movement." It's a do-it-yourself toolkit to getting involved in those causes that are important to you.
