ESSENCE magazine hosted a beauty event on Thursday, April 14th to educate retailers, editors and industry professionals on how to market, sell and cater to African American women. ESSENCE conducted an in-depth research consumer marketing study to show "the mindset of the passionate African American beauty consumer" and enlisted top beauty experts to discuss individual and industry concerns, thoughts and trends. Panelists included: Mikki Taylor (ESSENCE Editor-at-Large), Cynde Watson (Makeup Artist & Beauty Expert), Elena L. Jones, M.D. (Dermatologist), Eric Bland (Celebrity Hairstylist) and Susan Akkad (Senior Vice President, Corporate Diversity Marketing, Estee Lauder Companies, Inc).
According to ESSENCE research, there are 4 main Archetypes when dissecting the AA woman beauty consumer:
Queen Bea -- supremely confident, knowledgeable
Sheree De La Sol -- experimental, likes prestige and innovative brands and wants to conquer aging
Amber B. Free -- independent spirit, brand loyal, conscious, cautious and practical
Jane Jones -- the minimalist, time sensitive and likes the natural look
