Career Advice: STOP Telling All of Your Professional Business!

Snippet: Don't tell everyone everything!
Just some advice for all of you blabbing to your friends, co-workers and anyone that will listen about your career dreams, goals, drama and thoughts - this article is for YOU! When you have too many people all up in the mix of your should-be private affairs, you can easily be influenced to do, say and believe things that are not in line with who you are and what you want. I say this to simply mean, be selective in who you tell what to! In order to make effective decisions that will help you to achieve your highest potential and attain mental piece, you have to realize everyone's space in your life and treat them accordingly. Everyone you are surrounded by does not deserve to know about your professional life. As working professionals, we have to be mindful of the people we keep in our circle - whether its friends, co-workers, family, mentors, peers or haters. You have to analyze everyone's motives, strengths and character and decide if you are able to talk to them offline about your issues.

During the course of our career, we are going to experience some great highlights, as well as some challenging times and not everyone can know the details.

FAB can't interview everyone you surround yourself with and give you definitive answers on if this person has your best interest at heart, but we can provide you with some tips that will be helpful in determining how to build a professional network of people that genuinely want you to be both, professional and personally fulfilled. They'll not only support you, they will help to guide you and be the listening ear that you need.

In your professional realm, you should categorize who you surround yourself with . . .

*Gives great career advice.
*Wouldn't really use their advice, but great listener.
*Gives great career advice AND they're a great listener.
*They support you no matter what.
*Great to chit chat at work, but wouldn't tell a secret to0.
*Love to taking lunch breaks together and thats it!
*You share similar career paths, great to bounce ideas off of.
*Knowledgeable, always has some good career tips.
*You can mention little surface issues but wouldn't tell a top secret to.
*This person keeps it real whether you like it or not.
*This person is everything you need: good listener, gives great advice and sets a great example.
*Makes you laugh, that's it.
*You can totally ask for a favor!

There are tons more buckets you can put your peers into, but the bottom line is that you can have fruitful relationships without any problems as long as you understand everyone's role in your professional career and treat them accordingly. Everyone doesn't have to know everything! And they shouldn't!

Who are you talking to and are you sure you can trust them? Are you sure they're qualified to give you advice? Are they setting a great example for you to follow?

Time to consider these questions, my FABulous FAB readers!!!

FAB Has a MUST-READ Article for You!

FAB Report - AM NEW YORK - Sunday August 9, 2009 6:05 PM By Lucy Blatter (article below)

FAB Thoughts: I read this article and thought it was great for a couple of reasons. For one, many people are experiencing the emotions and thoughts this article describes. Everyone is seemingly having some doubt or reservation about their current career or unknown future career. The article is targeted toward those who have recently been layed off, but it is also for those seeking to transition into unfamiliar waters or just need to understand the power of "white-space thinking". I have reiterated the same things this article highlights - don't fear the unknown or silence in your brain. When you look out and see nothing, use this time to clear your thoughts and it's okay to not think anything for once in a while. Clear your head and go back into reality with a fresh perspective! In the article below, Dr. Siegler calls it "white-space thinking." Take your extra time to figure who you are and what you want! Can you answer that question . . . WHAT DO YOU WANT? Take the time to figure it out!!!

This article is deep, at least it hit a nerve for me. I hope it does the same for you. Enjoy!

Coping with post-layoff emotions

There’s no doubt about it: A layoff is difficult on the psyche, whether it’s happened to you or someone close to you. Dr. Joe Siegler, a psychiatrist and author of “Fire Your Therapist,” provided tips on how to keep yourself — and others — emotionally healthy after a job loss. Try to see your job loss as normal. First you must realize that it’s not a reflection on you. “Try not to let it get you depressed or down on yourself,” Siegler said. “It’s normal to have multiple careers and job losses in your life. “The reality is that companies need to downsize.” If you loved your job, you need to grieve, said Siegler. But then you need to move on.If your spouse or significant other is the one who’s been laid off, make an effort not to judge them. Siegler said he often sees spouses being supportive at first, but as time goes on the judgment starts. But he stressed that positive energy helps others find jobs. Sometimes couples coaching can help, too. See the opportunity“It’s a very creative opportunity,” Siegler said about being laid off. Think about what you’ve always wanted to do, and give it a shot. Do some ‘white-space thinking’ Siegler recommends leaving the house for a bit and allowing your mind to blank out; in other words, take part in “white-space thinking.” “It doesn’t have to be all day every day, just a quality hour or so. Clear your mind of worries,” he said. Once you’ve done that, keep a journal. “Then do a pros and cons list to every possible job,” he said. Try coaching Siegler believes career coaching is the best way to go for someone looking to change careers. He founded Chicago-based coaching company Full Life Coaching Centers 10 years ago, with the goal of helping those in transition.“Sometimes you need a coach, sometimes you don’t,” he said. “But if you know you’re not getting it done, you need one. “Most people thrive because coaches pull you and help you focus on your big goal. We all have areas and times in our lives where we need a little help,” he said. When it comes to choosing a good coach, Siegler said, “You have to be really careful. It’s a new field, and a lot of people claim to be coaches. The biggest thing is the person’s credentials. See if they have a Web site and check their credentials there.“I look at coaching as the next evolution, past therapy,” Siegler said. “It’s in line with cognitive behavioral therapy.”For that reason, he recommends coaches with a therapy background. “Layoffs can bring out the same issues that therapists deal with — attachment issues, depression issues, burnout, substance abuse and more,” he said.

CEW Writes Article About the Talented Celeb Makeup Artist, MALLY

FAB Thoughts: FAB met Mally Roncal IN PERSON and she was the most amazing and outgoing person! Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) recently wrote an article about her and I wanted to share the article with all my FAB readers. If you remember, I wrote an article about MALLY on July 10th, if you missed out, make sure to go back and read it! Her story is very inspiring . . . don't listen to me. Read for yourself!

ARTICLE CREDIT: CEW Beauty Insider
August 6, 2009

Make Up For All Mally Roncal

Celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal, whose Mally Beauty brand just celebrated four years on QVC, had planned to follow her parents’ footsteps. Both were medical doctors. "But I could not deny my love for fashion and beauty.” She switched majors, graduated, and began working in New York as a designer’s assistant. Yet, that fit wasn’t quite right either. “I loved wearing the clothes, but didn’t love designing them. What excited me most was fashion week, when we did the hair and makeup tests. All the amazing creams and lashes and colors; I would literally start vibrating."

Early Exposure
My mother was very glamorous, and all about beauty. When I was two years old my mother was diagnosed with cancer, and lived another 15 years to see me graduate high school. When she was in the hospital, it was my job to pack her makeup bag. She refused to lie in a hospital bed and look like she was dying. She would always put her `face on.’ In high school, I was the girl who wanted to touch up your makeup.
Standing Up for Cosmetics I’ve seen how powerful makeup is my entire life. It can affect and change your life and your attitude. I get very angry at people who call this a `frivolous’ business. I get on my soap box and have full-on fights with people who say makeup is for insecure women or for those who want to cover themselves up. The biggest reason I got into cosmetics is to help women. From the biggest superstars in the world to the QVC customer who is head of her household to Fortune 500 CEOs, cosmetics affect women in exactly the same way.

Taking Chances
When I realized that I wanted to pursue makeup, I hit the road and starting doing makeup on anything that wasn’t nailed to the ground. I don’t have formal training. I taught myself. I would do cold calls, walking into modeling agencies and photography studios. It was a slow process, and I just chugged along. Sometimes I made money, sometime I didn’t. I was not an overnight success.

Hanging In
My big break came when I met my agent Jim Indorato, then at Garren. I had been rejected by several smaller agencies before him. I remember standing outside his door, looking skyward to my mother, praying, 'Please don't let this be as painful as I think it is going to be.'Jim flipped through my portfolio and said he didn’t see anything he could use. When I went to grab the book, he stopped me. He said he saw an 'energy' in me, and he would take me on as his 'project.' My first assignment was a shoot for international Elle covers with top models like Heidi Klum. I was in heaven. It only takes one person believing in you to change your life.

Business Sense
My husband taught me to always treat this like a business. It's not all Vogue. I worked with everyone from Cooking Light to Woman’s Day. I never said `no’ to any magazine ever. You never know where that editor is going to end up or who is going to pick that issue up. It drives me crazy when I work with young artists and I have to ask them, 'where is your invoice?' If you don't send me an invoice, I can’t pay you. What are you going to eat?

Seeing the Future
Yes, I got bit by the celebrity bug. I also worked for various cosmetics brands as a spokesperson. One of my first gigs was with Revlon, and I did an ABC news piece on trends at the Oscars. I also did Kelly Osborne’s makeup on The Osborne’s show. I saw the power of television in educating women, that’s why I wanted to launch my line on QVC.

Starting Up a Brand
It was my 7th wedding anniversary and I was in Paris. My husband wasn’t with me. I had missed every Thanksgiving, yet I had attended every Grammy and every MTV awards. Something had to change. I needed to figure out how to take the business to a place that was lucrative and would require less travel. All along, I had gotten calls from women asking, 'how can I look like Celine?' Even my auntie said, 'you make Beyoncé look so beautiful, why not me?' The answer was to create a high performance makeup line that didn’t need to be reapplied constantly. Most women do not touch up their makeup during the day.

Finding Help
I needed someone to help me do this, and I asked around for the best person. I was pointed to Don Pettit. (Pettit’s experience includes work with Noxell, Jane Cosmetics and Estée Lauder.) I forced him to meet with me. We launched on QVC in March 2005 and sold out in 36 minutes. Our packaging is pink, feminine and girly. We do face, eye and lip products and makeup tools and kits. In addition to QVC, Mally Beauty is sold on mallybeauty.com, amazon.com and beauty.com, as well as at Henri Bendel. We are looking to add more stores soon.

About the company
My husband is my business partner. We have an office in our home and have about 4-6 people working for us, along with freelancers and consultants. We are so nose-to-the-grindstone. We have twin daughters and another baby on the way. But this [business] is our baby too. We started the company with our own money, along with some investments from family and friends. We have selected a few labs that we work with. They know my criteria. I want to create products for use every day and that perform. Because you can be as fabulous as you want, but if you don’t deliver quality, the customer will return that stuff in three days.

Coming Soon
We are launching our first fragrance in October. We are in negotiations for a TV show, and are also looking to extend the brand into clothes and other fun stuff.

Spreading the Word
There is nothing corporate about us. We are very grassroots. We don’t traditionally advertise. However, we are on Facebook, Twitter and I have a video blog. We also have Team Mally, which gives devoted Mally shoppers the opportunity to earn rewards by recruiting other customers. People who love the brand want to share it.
