Jewelry plays a starring role in fashion. For centuries, the well-dressed have also been the well-jeweled, and diamonds are the stone of choice. The association of diamonds with engagements and weddings is a cultural constant, and every fiancée, from Elizabeth Taylor to Carrie Bradshaw, knows that "diamonds are a girl's best friend." They dazzle today on starlets walking the red carpet, but also on male rap stars, flaunting their success with "bling."

Bringing together major jewelers, gemologists, and fashion curators and forecasters, this conference considers diamonds from every angle, addressing the qualities that underlie their perennial appeal, among them the allure of flash and sparkle, cut and quality, and source. Also considered are legendary stones and their history, the work of major houses, and how film has helped shape our evolving perception of diamonds.
