Building Professional Portfolio: Save Everything!

NOTE OF ADVICE: At work, your boss asks you to make a copy of a very important contract....make a copy. Your boss presents a business plan to discuss the firm's new ideas...make a copy. The receptionist has updated her files and wants to throw important papers away. Save them. Your weekly team meetings seem boring but nevertheless business was discussed. Save itinerary and notes. Your current job is not your dream job, doesn't matter. Save all papers, forms, files, contacts, emails. All this is to say that all business ideas are inter-related somehow so trust and believe that your work experience will one day come full circle and you'll be prepared - because you SAVED EVERYTHING! Obviously, you'll have to decide what's most important and what can seriously be trashed, but if the material has the potential to be useful today or in the future, make sure to keep it in a safe place. Start building your portfolio of professional knowledge today! In today's world, if you don't have proof, you didn't do it or see it - so keep the proof!

In your professional portfolio, you should definitely include the following:

- Business cards

- Contact information

- Important business emails (house them in a folder, making it easy to retrieve later)

- Contracts, business plans, letters, one sheets, flyers, postcards (anything that allows you to see how communication/marketing is done, save it!)

- Budgets (understanding cost analyst is critical)

- Projects (projects completed by others and especially your personal work)

- Meeting agendas (and meeting minutes)

- Any and everything that allows you to see how a company operates

***I think you get the jist...just make sure if you ever leave a job, you are well connected even though you're not there...(and even if you're not planning to switch jobs, we work to better ourselves too - so regardless, save it!) YOU NEVER KNOW...don't have any regrets, just save it!***

Career Journal

Your Thoughts, Your Dreams, Your Future...
If you've been a faithful reader, you'll understand the necessity of having a "Career Partner." Now that you have successfully secured a "Career Partner" (or should be in the process of doing so), it's now time to take that step a bit further. By the way, if you don't have a "Career Partner" please refer to the entry on Monday, February 16th for details. Time to get to work...with a partner in crime in place, you are now ready to take action and hit the ground running. What does that mean, you may wonder. It means that you need to get a CAREER JOUNRAL!!! A career journal is a book that houses NOTHING but information concerning your current career or future career. It is simply a safe haven for ideas, goals, thoughts, plan of action, to-do lists, contacts, and any and all professional related topics. Note: You are not allowed to scribble anything else in this notebook. The point of having a career journal is that it allows you to store all of your information in one place, forcing you to be organized. It also allows you to be self-reflective, as it is a good idea to go back and read your professional thoughts and goals.

In order for your journal to really be effective you should note the following:
  • Any time you have an idea, write it down (don't rely on your memory)
  • Always date your journal entries (keeping a timeline is helpful)
  • Be specific in your entries (the more details you provide, helps to piece together the puzzle)
  • Don't be afraid to share your ideas (others may have the missing piece you're searching for; however, don't share everything...)
  • Write in your journal OFTEN (everyone's writing style is different, but you should at least be writing once a week at the minimum)

Once you have gotten into the habit of tracking your professional progress, you will start to feel more in control and powerful. Information is power. We must take responsibilities for ourselves and our futures, having a career journal is a major step in this process.

If you have a career journal, congratulations! If you don't, you have homework!

Start tracking your professional stories today!

26 and Starting to Sizzle: Tammi Lorraine!

Never met her in my life. After a two 1/2 hour phone conversation, we were well acquainted. Who you may ask?! A dreamer, a believer, a risk taker, a sometimes doubter, a hopeful, an entrepreneur, A Miami-bred now Californian – Tammi Lorraine. As you may have noticed, the common thread of FAB is that we seek out those who may not be where they want to be, but those who are well on their way…and if they don’t have a plan, they are planning on getting a plan – not just A plan but rather THE plan! In this vein, Tammi Lorraine is no different. Tammi was able to take her talent of writing and public speaking and transform her passion into an online radio talk show – focusing on one of her favorite topics, MEN and WOMEN. Tammi’s insight into how men and women can better co-exist as friends and lovers is knowledge that is much needed in our society – she found an untouched niche in the entertainment world and is currently turning her passion into a business. Her company is called HIS&HERS – first it started off as an online radio show, now HIS&HERS has blossomed into a blog and interactive website, along with growing the online talk show. Tammi shared with FAB the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur and what it’s like to move across the country to pursue her passion. When talking with Tammi, she shared some of her deepest thoughts, it was refreshing to hear someone be vulnerable, doesn’t admitting our fears somehow make us stronger?! Tammi admits that she often looks to celebrities for inspiration, especially Oprah because of her unwavering career and commitment to delivering news and entertainment to the masses. She even brings up mega superstar Beyonce, saying “…I look at Beyonce and see that she is 27 and has 10 Grammys and making millions…I’m 26 and I'm not there yet…” I respond with “…yeah, but Beyonce started singing at 4, got a record deal at 15 and has been in the business for over 10 years, you just started a couple of years ago, give yourself a break…your time is coming!”

Profile Snapshot:

Hometown: Born and raised in Miami, FL but relocated to Northern Virginia with my family in 1998.

College: Attended and graduated from George Mason University in 2005 with a Bachelors Degree in Communication.

Entrepreneur: HIS&HERS Show was conceived on April of 2008 and birthed August 4, 2008.

LET'S TALK...

FAB: Your online talk show is both hilarious and informative - in an entertaining kind of way. How did you ever think to create this type of show?

TL: (laughs and huge grin!) The HIS&HERS Show was designed to spark dialogue between the sexes. Most of our topics do not have a cut in stone answer but hopefully at the conclusion, the listener will be able to take something away. I want the show to be an entertaining, but insightful look into male and female relations.

FAB: With some of the risque topics you discuss, your audience has to be pretty grown and sexy, right?!

TL: Yes, I would say so. The target audience for the HIS&HERS Show is from 21 to 33 years old. Although we have listeners of high school age to adults over 40 who tune in each week and actively participate by leaving comments on the shows.

FAB: How often do you update your show?

TL: New episodes of the HIS&HERS Show are aired every Monday. There are three additional bloggers on the site who submit articles, Video Blogs (Vblogs) and Poll Questions of the week. Soon we will have an area where listeners can submit Vblog with relationship questions and can receive not only an answer from me but also from their peers. I'm working on giving my listeners a reason to visit the HIS&HERS Show site everyday for new and intriguing information.
FAB: Would you say you're a relationship expert or have you gotten so tired of the dating scene you needed an outlet to share your frustrations?

TL: A little bit of both actually...I wouldn't call myself an expert on every subject in regards to men and women relations. Everyday I'm learning more about my male counterparts and even more about myself. My passion to dig deeper into this subject is what qualifies me. I fervently desire to see individual relationships strengthened and fruitful especially among my peers. My heart has always gone out to state of men and women relations. I believe since Adam and Eve there has been a hindrance in communication between the sexes. My hope is that through the HIS&HERS Show, we can begin to tear down these hindrances and even if the topic isn't specifically relationship related, it will promote dialogue nonetheless.

FAB: So, you obviously plan to blow this show out the water, what exactly is your career goal?

TL: I definitely want the show to be picked up. My ultimate goal is to have my own daytime talk show and for it to be the highest rated talk show in the history of television. Oprah Winfrey can't keep that title forever.

FAB: Good point! Well, you're definitely on the right track and with continued perseverance, FAB is sure you'll become the shining star you desire to be. With that said, you automatically jumped at the idea of teaming up with FAB. How do you believe this organization can help you with your personal and career aspirations?

LF: FAB can help me by continuing to provide inspirational blogs to not only uplift my spirit but to also refresh it. Already through reading "Who is YOUR career partner?!" I am assessing my team and identifying my 'career partner'. I also know FAB will provide a wonderful opportunity for me to network with other like-minded individuals. I am excited to see more of what FAB has in store for its' readers.

All out of words, so I listened to others spit their words...

Sometimes when your fuel is low, it's nice to feed off other's energy...even if they aren't necessarily talking about anything that is on your mind, it nevertheless stimulates your creative energy and feeds your mind - enabling your creative sensibilities, stimulating your mental capacities, and discouraging your overwithdrawn realities. My mind needs a break, so I decided to listen to poetry while my thoughts marinate. C'mon take a break with me and listen to these poems real intent-ly and gain some momentum from these creative talented poets.

These videos have nothing to do with career advancement or work or networking or goals...they're simply videos to stimulate our creative inner selves. Don't overthink, just enjoy!

Who is YOUR career partner?!

Not your LIFE partner, but your CAREER partner...what does this mean?! A career partner is someone that you can share your goals, dreams, career and personal aspirations with - this person could be a friend, family member, mentor, co-worker, or boyfriend/girlfriend. It doesn't matter who it is, what matters is that this person keeps you on track, this person holds you accountable for things that you've said you want to accomplish, this person has your BEST interest at heart and is going to make sure that you do what you say. We all get side tracked sometimes, which is the precise reason why we need a career partner. No one has to know your goals in its entirety, but when you speak your goals they have now become more tangible, more real. I have many career partners, my journal currently serves as the #1 partner at this point. I write my goals down, give myself a feasible timeline, work hard to achieve my designated goals and then I go back and re-read my "to do" list. There is nothing worse than reading my enthusiastic "to-do" list entry with guilt that I was not able to accomplish it - that in itself is enough punishment. With this said, our career partners should hold us accountable for things we did not accomplish and praise us for the things we did. It is not his or her job to make us feel like failures if we did not achieve our goals, but rather continue to re-iterate the importance of staying on track and encourage us that we can do it - despite any humps in the road we may have encountered. Career partners do not necessarily have to be our mentors or someone that can even help us to achieve our goals, this person simply listens to us and helps us to stay focused, just by being supportive and lending an ear.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN FINDING a CAREER PARTNER:

- you trust this person (there is no competition, but a sincere desire to see you succeed)
- you can be honest and share your inner thoughts ("career partner" must be a good listener)
- gives you honest feedback (isn't passive and just agrees with everything you say)
- talks to you on a regular basis (or how else will they help you to stay focused)
- they are good to bounce ideas off of (brainstorming sessions are fun and insightful)
- they hold you accountable (not afraid to call you out if you're straying or congratulates your successes)
- easy person to talk to (you feel comfortable laying out your plan of action)

***FAB Homework:

Your homework is to find a CAREER PARTNER ~ you must ask this person to be your "career partner" and explain the process mentioned above. Spell our his or her responsibilities by telling them that their main focus is to be a friend, a cheerleader, and give you the good and constructive feedback necessary to help you achieve your goal(s). Having a support system is critical and it starts here.

***Homework assignment to be completed: (get out your career journal and take notes)

1.) Who is your "career partner"?

2.) What are their strengths and how can they help you?

3.) What is the agreement you and your partner have come to?

4.) What steps are you both going to take to ensure the relationship is professionally beneficial?

After you've answered these 4 questions, you are now well on your way to creating and/or building to your web of professional support! Congratulations!!!

I've Finally Figured it Out...

Even though she doesn't know it, B. Smith is my MENTOR...

While watching the BET Honor Awards show this week, I had an "agh hah" moment. I was relaxing at home, listening to the show as the announcer talked about the award, "Entrepreneur of the Year." The announcer started narrating why the recipient should receive this award and then a short video was played highlighting the career of a pioneer - I literally stopped in my tracks - leaned in, listened even more intently and my heart began to shutter...my moment of clarity hit me. SHE is it! The supermodel turned entrepreneur, B. Smith, is the woman that understands me. Her story is much like my story. And then, I really realized that we have something in common - in the video that highlighted her professional accomplishments, she mentioned how she was always searching for ways that she could take all of her interests and meld them into a career, as she was never just interested in one thing. As evident, in her extraordinary career in the restaurant, beauty, fashion, and home sectors. She found a way to make it all work, and that's why I love B. Smith. It sounds unfathomable, but she made it obtainable - that's awesome in so many ways. I've been searching for a professional symbol of inspiration, someone that has treaded some of the same waters that has my name flowing down the stream. My destiny has already been written, but isn't it nice to see a real-life example just to reiterate that it's possible to live your wildest dream? I've never met B. Smith, but I plan to. And when I do, I want to ask her some of the same questions that I ask myself - when you feel in your heart you are meant to do something but the grid for achieving your goals is not so black and white, how do you create your GPS system to ensure that you arrive at your designated destination? I'll keep you posted on her response, trust me - there WILL be a response. B. Smith is my new inspiration, who's yours?!

Exclusive Interview: SHINE Magazine's Founder/Editor-in-Chief, Tracey Mitchell

SHINE MAGAZINE: College. Style. Hustle. Life.

Interview Exclusive
The Founder and Editor-in-Chief of SHINE Magazine, Tracey Mitchell, recently spoke with FAB about the joys of chasing her dream and ALL that comes along with entrepreneurship and breaking grounds on a new idea. MEETING TRACEY: When first talking with Tracey on the phone, I could sense her enthusiasm and professionalism - it made me smile. She lives in Tennessee so I've never met her in person, but I feel as though we've been knowing each other for quite some time. Her zeal to succeed was definitely evident and I knew immediately, FAB had to know more. Tracey is a 24-year old graduate student at Tennessee State University, earning her Master's in English; and of course she's also a talented writer, entrepreneur, innovator, thinker and motivator. In a multiple choice game, she'd be E: all of the above! Tracey began her writing career as an undergrad English Major at the University of Alabama. Her beginning is similar to many writers - working on the school newspaper. At first, the thought of delivering ground breaking news to her peers sounded exhilarating and fulfilling but the excitement soon came to an end as she realized her school (Alabama State University) didn't have the staff or resources to print a paper that would actually make a difference (at least Tracey didn't think so). Although the seed of entrepreneurship has always been apart of her, this pivotal moment was the first sign of that seed growing into more than just an idea. After careful thought and consideration, Tracey transferred to the University of Alabama, where the resources were easier to come by and her talent would have its place. SHINE Magazine would soon be on the horizon. Tracey began perfecting her writing skills and continued to be apart of many organizations in school. Her dedication to student involvement paired with her entrepreneur spirit led her to the conclusion that college students and young professionals lack a magazine that allows their voices to be heard - a place where students could broadcast their work, find out information about careers, relationships, fashion and more importantly a platform to share in each other's college and professional hustle. Thus, the tag line of SHINE Magazine: College, Style, Hustle, Life. In 2008, Tracey officially breathed life into SHINE Magazine. FAB was able to talk with Tracey on how she was able to launch the online magazine and what that means to the college and professional world.

TRACEY MITCHELL
Profile:

Hometown: Mobile, AL - I have lived everywhere though. My father was in the military, so as people like to say, I was a military brat. I've lived in San Diego, Portland, New Orleans and Norfolk, VA.

College: Attended Alabama State University, then transferred to the University of Alabama '07 and current graduate student at Tennessee State University

Personal Goals: Being able to do God's work and fulfill the purposes that He has planned for me. Like most people I have dreams to be able to buy a certain car, live well, and provide for my family; however, I think that with faith and hard work, everything else is taken care of.

Professional Goals: I want SHINE to grow internationally and be a well-known publication and a source for college students and graduates. I believe my gift of creativity will take me far. With that said, I am also working on a children's book for young girls; also a friend and I would like to start a children's boutique in the future...years down the road. Other than that, I want to be able to open a youth club filled with programs to help further their education and help them achieve a better life.
1.) SHINE was not in existence. You were just living your life normally, but something was missing. What?

An outlet for college students to get their word across in a way that is both entertaining and thought provoking. The market to fill that gap was wide open and ready to be snatched up. At the time prior to when I start my own magazine, I was a Senior Staff Reporter at The Crimson White at the University of Alabama. We had just finished having our "Pow-Wow" meeting about the upcoming school year. It was a general meeting as well as a meeting to get to know the "paid staff" (myself included). I meet many African American journalism students who would ask me, "What can I do to get on with the staff?" or "I need clips, but cant seem to get a writing position." Simultaneously, things started to take a turn for the worst with my own position. I was getting both praises and discouragement from my previous editor and my at-the-time current editor. On the one hand, my former editor was telling me that I was making a major improvement and my current editor was saying the exact opposite. It began to be more about race than talent. I was frankly tired of being the token black girl to cover all the fraternity events and other functions. At first, yes, it was fun being known as the "reporter girl." And many times I loved the fact that I could attend an event, meet new people, write about it, and portray my people in a positive light within the media. That brought me joy. But the disrespect of some of my co-workers did not. So I began to think BIG. I thought about why all this was happening to me. I realized that I was meant to help others. So I put myself aside, thought about those students that had came up to me for help, and begin to think to create something for them.

2.) You're changing the way college students view college life as simply a bubble for learning and partying! Instead, you're a real-life example of how one sees a problem and challenges themselves to correct it. Why did you decide to accept this enormous challenge?

I accepted the challenge because I looked at is as a dream, not a burden. I wanted to because of the will to want to help others. I've always had a big heart as well as an entrepreneur-type spirit. When I was younger I used to own a book called, "Better than a Lemonade Stand". It was a do-it-yourself type of business owning book for children. I love innovation and when you can use it to help others at the same time, you're doing good.

3.) SHINE needs what in order for it to BLOW UP? What are the ingredients SHINE needs from us readers out there?

We already have the adequate staff members, writers, and innovative talent on with SHINE. We would like to continue to let aspiring journalists apply for writing positions by contacting us via email. But other than that, I would say feedback is the main ingredient. We are not forcing readers to like all that they read, but we are asking them to let us know what they want to hear from us, comment on the articles, and just stay on top of us as a publication. That will make us serve them better.

4.) FAB is like SHINE in many ways, how do you feel a grass-roots organization can help you and your magazine?

I think that with anything, it takes those small steps to add to the big ones. It takes a way of being able to know your business as well as how you can partner with another to gain a consistency in your approach to the reader. It goes along with that statement: stand strong, but be flexible an able to bend when needed.

5.) Tell FAB something that is buried beneath the surface of the graduate student turned entrepreneur. What don't we know, but should?

Well like I was saying, I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. That may or may not be evident. Because in order to have your own business, you have to be able to give 110% and time management and faith is key! One thing about me that I would like to share is that I am somewhat of a "bohemian." My insight on life is always optimistic, I have a desire to help others, and I have a desire to win! That is pretty much how most of our readers and staff are as well. We are hustlers but we are not in this to double-cross anyone else to get to the top. It's much better if we can all get there together right?

6.) Describe yourself in 3 words.

Creative, Driven, and Original

7.) 3 biggest challenges right now (personally and professionally)?

Patience and Patience (on both sides). It's something I'm working on, but it will come with time.

8.) If your future had to consist of 3 things, what would they be?

Liberation, success, and happiness

9.) You laugh most when...

I'm around my dad. He is hilarious to me. And the best part about it is half of the time, he does not even know he is so funny. That's makes it even better.

10.) You get frustrated most when...

The day is up. They go by so fast these days. But it's cool, cause It's just making me have to get up earlier to get a good start.

Tracey Mitchell is a woman of drive and certainly possesses the will to do good - what a perfect mix of entrepreneurship and humanity. We've gotten insight into the personal and professional side of Tracey. With that said, it is my hope that by reading Tracey's story, FAB readers will gain more insight into not just becoming a successful entrepreneur, but rather get a panoramic view of what it's like to be a work in progress and a success - all at the same time! Tracey Mitchell is far from reaching her full potential, yet she already has so much to be grateful for. Thank you Tracey, FAB loves SHINE Magazine and we know FAB readers will too! PERSONAL BRANDING, it matters!

Develop your personal brand to land a job...

Article exerpt from the website, The Loop 21 (an economics, politics, and current events portal focusing on the African American community).

When we hear the word "branding," it usually makes us think of a big corporation, not an individual.
The concept of personal branding has become more popular in the last couple years, and now the need for individuals to better market themselves within the workplace is more important than ever. The unemployment rate for blacks soared to 11.9 percent in December — 7.2 percent overall — and nearly 2.6 million jobs were lost over the entire year, more than in any year since 1945, according to CNNMoney.
